The Sovereignty of God

The Sovereignty of God The dictionary defines “sovereign” as “superior,” “greatest,” “supreme in power and authority,” “ruler,” and “independent of all others”. There is absolutely nothing that happens in the universe that is outside of God’s influence and authority. As King of kings and Lord of lords, God has no limitations. God’s sovereignty is his right and power to do all that he decides and desires to do. Job 42:2“I know that thou canst do everything, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.” God has the right but we have the choice to do what we decide to do. When he decides to do a thing, he does it, and no one can stop him. That’s sovereignty. These aspects of the Great God are brought out clearly in the Scriptures. Revelation 21:6 “And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.” God is above all things and before all things. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. He is immortal, and He is present everywhere so that everyone can know Him. Colossians 1:16 “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:” Jeremiah 32:17“Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:” God can do all things and accomplish all things Psalms 103:19 “The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom ruleth over all.” God is in control of all things and rules over all things. He has power and authority over everything. Even Satan has to ask God’s permission before he can act. That’s what being sovereign means. It means being the ultimate source of all power, authority, and everything that exists. Only God can make those claims; therefore, it’s God’s sovereignty that makes Him superior to all other gods and makes Him, and Him alone, worthy of worship. God’s Sovereignty calls for our submission as He loves us and rules in Love. Romans 8:28 promises that “in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” God is the sovereign over all of creation and exercises his rule, authority, and complete control. God’s control is always efficacious and universal. Nothing can prevent him from accomplishing his purpose. His covenantal solidarity and presence are always with His people. As Lord, God not only controls everything but also utters commands, words of life, that graciously govern the ongoing life of his creatures. So even though Scripture teaches that God controls everything, we should not think of his sovereignty as impersonal. God’s sovereign lordship is deeply personal. And as Lord, he has made a sovereign commitment to be “with” those who are his. Indeed, God’s sovereignty is a broad concept, including all that God is and all that he does, even embracing his love.
